The Rolf C. Hagen Group of Companies owns the Fluval brand. – a pet supplies company that was founded in 1955. While the Hagen group sells a range of pet supplies, Fluval focuses on the aquarium. They sell a range of products – from the media in filters all the way up to the aquariums themselves. Fluval are, however, best know for their filters – particularly their 206 / 306 / 406 range, of which the middle range Fluval 306 is reviewed below.

Fluval 306 Canister Filter Description

The Fluval 306 Canister Filter is part of the 06 Series of fish tank filters produced by Fluval. It is suitable for aquariums with a total capacity of 300 liters (approximately 70 gallons). It is known for its powerful motor technology and ability to run quietly – especially compared to many other filters on the market. Made in Italy, the Fluval 306 Canister Filter, is perfect for those looking for a high quality filter capable of keeping the water in 70 gallon fish tanks perfectly clear.

Made in Italy, the Fluval 306 Canister Filter has a multi-stage filter pump and can pump out 303 gallons (1,150 liters) per hour. It has a filter circulation of 206 gallons (approx 780 liters) per hour and a filtration volume of 6.6 liters (approx. 1.7 US gallons). The Fluval 306 Canister Filter has dimensions of 10 x 7 x 18″ (25 x 18 x 46 cm).

The Fluval 306 can be used for both fresh and saltwater aquariums. It’s square shaped container is able to hold up to 50% more water than containers of a similar size that are round in shape. It makes great us of it’s sound dampening design, providing filtration without the significant ambient noise generated by other filtration systems on the market. The 306 also comes with a dual level foam screen as well as an intake strainer.

The 06 Series features several improvements on the prior models. Notably:

  • A sound dampening impeller which helps to reduce the noise of the filter
  • A redesigned impeller cover to assist with durability, and
  • An improved priming mechanism – making the system easier to start

Fluval 306 Review

Previous versions of this filter caused some issues with the priming. These seem to have been rectified in the 06 series. It is easy to set up. Simply follow the instructions provided, or by use one of the Youtube videos that are available for your assistance.

There is no doubt that Fluval filters are among the best (if not these best) available on the market today. The Fluval 206, has more than enough power to keep a 300 liter fish tank clean and clear, And it is incredibly efficient at doing so.

Some users have complained that the box / packaging of the Fluval 306 appeared to have been opened before. I.e. it may have been a refurbished or repaired model. To ensure the integrity of your product we would recommend that you only by it directly from Fluval via Amazon.

Overall we think that the 06 Series, while not cheap, is a great option for professionals and enthusiasts alike.

3 Year Limited Warranty

Per Fluval:

“Fluval 06 Series External Filters are guaranteed against defects in material and workmanship under normal aquarium usage and service for 3 years from date of purchase. Non-replaceable and non-serviceable parts will be repaired or replaced at Hagen’s discretion, free of charge, when the complete filter is returned with all components along with a valid proof of purchase and postage paid.

This warranty does not apply to any filter that has been subject to misuse, negligence or tampering. It does not apply to filters which have been incorrectly assembled or unsuitably maintained or where installation and maintenance instructions have not been followed correctly. The warranty does not apply to wear and tear parts such as the impeller, impeller cover or motor seal.

No liability is assumed with respect to loss or damage to livestock or personal property irrespective of the cause thereof. Before returning the filter under warranty terms, please ensure that all setup and maintenance instructions have been followed.
