The Fluval brand is owned by the Rolf C. Hagen Group of Companies. It was formed in 1955 by (unsurprisingly) Rolf C. Hagen and is a pet supplies company. Fluval focuses on fish tank products. Everything from the aquariums themselves to the products, filters and heaters that help the aquariums to run smoothly. They are perhaps most famous for their 206 / 306 / 406 range of filters, of which the Fluval 406 plays a prominent role.

Fluval 406 Canister Filter Description

The Fluval 406 canister filter is part of the 06 Series of fish tank filters produced by Fluval. It is suitable for aquariums with a total capacity of 400 liters (approximately 100 gallons). It is known for its powerful motor technology and ability to run quietly. This is especially true when compared to many other filters on the market!

The Fluval 406 is made in Italy. It has a multi stage filter pump and can pump out 383 gallons (1,450 liters) per hour. It has a filter circulation of 245 gallons (approx 930 liters) per hour and a filtration volume of 8.5 liters (approx. 2.2 US gallons). The Fluval 206 Canister Filter has dimensions of 10 x 8 x 20″ (25 x 20 x 50.8 cm).

The Fluval 406 can be used for both fresh and salt water aquariums. It’s square shaped container is able to hold up to 50% more water than containers of a similar size that are round in shape. It makes great use of it’s sound dampening design, providing filtration without the significant ambient noise generated by other systems on the market. The 206 also comes with a dual level foam screen as well as an intake strainer.

The 06 Series features several improvements on the prior models. Notably:

  • A sound dampening impeller which helps to reduce the noise of the filter
  • A redesigned impeller cover to assist with durability, and
  • An improved priming mechanism – making the system easier to start

Previous versions of this filter caused some issues with the priming. These seem to have been fixed in the 06 series. It is easy to set up. Simply follow the instructions provided, or by use one of the Youtube videos that are available to help you.

There is no doubt that Fluval filters are among the best (if not these best) on the market today. The Fluval 406, has more than enough power to keep a 400 liter fish tank clean and clear. And it is very efficient at doing so.

Some users have complained that the box of the Fluval 406 seemed to have been opened before. I.e. it may have been a refurbished or repaired model. To ensure the integrity of your product we would recommend that you only by it directly from Fluval via Amazon.

Per Fluval:

“Fluval 06 Series External Filters are guaranteed against defects in material and workmanship under normal aquarium usage and service for 3 years from date of purchase. Non-replaceable and non-serviceable parts will be repaired or replaced at Hagen’s discretion, free of charge, when the complete filter is returned with all components along with a valid proof of purchase and postage paid.

This warranty does not apply to any filter that has been subject to misuse, negligence or tampering. It does not apply to filters which have been incorrectly assembled or unsuitably maintained or where installation and maintenance instructions have not been followed correctly. The warranty does not apply to wear and tear parts such as the impeller, impeller cover or motor seal.

No liability is assumed with respect to loss or damage to livestock or personal property irrespective of the cause thereof. Before returning the filter under warranty terms, please ensure that all setup and maintenance instructions have been followed.
