Kayak Fishing
Fishing kayaks can be one of the best pieces of equipment to buy for fishing. It allows you to go to many places that you were not able to before, and can be a great source of exercise at the same time. Below we outline a number of tips in order to get your started with (or improve upon) your kayak fishing.
1. Choose the right type of fishing kayak
Kayak fishing is normally done in either a single or double seated fishing kayak. Before buying your first fishing kayak consider when you want to be alone in your boat, or with someone else. Single seated fishing kayaks can be great if you want some alone time, but just remember that you will have to do all of the paddling!
2. Realise that you are going to get wet
Unlike fishing from shore, or a sturdy fishing boat, you are likely to get wet when kayak fishing. Neoprene can be a great material to use – the same material as is used in wetsuits. Another option is to choose waters and a waterproof jacket as this will help to keep the moisture at bay. This is important as wet clothing can quickly lower your body temperature and in more extreme cases lead to hypothermia.
3. Be safe
Wear a life jacket! Even if you are a great swimmer it is important to wear a life jacket. It is also advisable to kayak fish with other people. They will then be able to assist if you get into trouble. Regardless of whether you are kayak fishing alone or with others, tell someone on shore where you will be going and when to expect you back.
4. Bring a cell phone
You’ll need a waterproof bag to store your mobile phone, but it can be a lifesaver (literally) if you or one of your party get into trouble and need to summon help from shore.
5. Bring plenty of food and water
Ensure that you pack enough water for your fishing kayak adventure, particularly on hot days. It is also wise to bring food if you are going to be on the water for a longer period of time. The last think you want to do is run out of energy as you are trying to paddle back to shore!
6. Weather, weather, weather
Ensure that you check the weather report before heading out on your fishing kayak. If there is any doubt, either don’t go, or at least stay close to shore. Even if the forecast is clear, ensure that you keep an eye on the weather when you are out on your kayak. If you get caught in a storm, it may be very difficult to get back to shore. Especially if you are fishing at night!
Hopefully these tips will help you to get started with kayak fishing. It can be a great experience, as long as you are prepared and have the right equipment.
Enjoy!
Of course, if you would rather just keep fish rather than catch them, it might be worth thinking about a 20 gallon fish tank, a 24 inch LED light for 20 gallon fish tanks and some guppies to get you started!
