Optimal Betta Fish Temperature
The optimal Betta fish temperature if for the water to be between 78 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit. That is approx 25.5 to 26.5 Centigrade. It is possible for a Betta fish to survive outside of this temperature, but it will add stress to your fish. This can result in increase susceptibility to disease.
To reach and maintain this temperature range if is worth considering the range of high quality aquarium heaters that are on the market today.
Betta Fish Temperature Ranges
78-80 Fahrenheit – the optimal Betta fish temperature
This is the optimal temperature for your Betta. They will not only be comfortable, but thrive at these temperatures. The chance of disease is greatly reduced and you’ll end up with an incredibly happy fish. Assuming all other aspects of the tank are optimal!
74-78 and 80 to 84 Fahrenheit
Outside the optimal 78-80 Fahrenheit range Bettas are still able to survive. They will however be surviving rather than thriving. The change of disease is increased and they will overall be less happy fish.
Below 74 and Above 84 Fahrenheit
At 84 Fahrenheit and above your Betta runs the risk of serious overheating. Below 74 the Betta has a significantly higher chance of contracting diseases.
How to Achieve the Optimal Betta Fish Temperature
To achieve the optimal temperature for Betta fish, you’ll need a variety of things:
1. A suitability sized tank
Your aquarium heater needs to be appropriate for your tank. There is no point in using a 25 Watt aquarium heater for a 40 gallon aquarium!
2. A good quality aquarium heater
Aquarium heaters vary in both power and quality. If you want to maintain the optimal Betta fish temperature in your aquarium it is important that you have a heater that is of the correct capability. Heater capabilities are measured in Watts and normally start from 25 Watts for small tanks all the way up to 200 Watts and beyond.
It is also important that your Betta fish temperature is maintained safely – you do not want your heater manfunctioning and overheating the tank! We have laid out a range of high quality aquarium heaters for you to consider.
3. An accurate water temperature gauge
Aquarium heaters come with in-built temperature gauges so that they known when to actively supply heat to the tank. However, it is worth considering purchasing an aquarium temperature gauge as well. This has two main benefits:
- The standalone unit is often more precise than the entry level heaters. You will therefore be able to ensure that the heater is indeed functioning correctly.
- The temperature gauge can be placed at the opposite side of your tank from the heater. This will allow you to check whether the optimal Betta fish temperature is being supplied to the whole tank. If you are finding that the temperature varies by more than a degree or so it may be worth (carefully) moving your heater closer to the pump to ensure that the warmed water is circulated about the tank.
Betta Fish Temperature – Conclusion
Betta fish tanks should ideally be keep between 78 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit (25.5-26.5 degrees Celsius). Although this is the optimal temperature, they can also survive if the water is a few degrees either side of this range. It may, however, affect how long your Betta fish lives.
