90 Gallon Fish Tanks

90 gallon fish tanks are quite a jump from 55 gallon tanks. They offer aquarists a great deal of flexibility with what to introduce to the tank. Given the size of the tank it is also possible to compartment the tank if desired. Below we’ve outlined several options if you are looking to add a 90 gallon aquarium to your home or office.

How Many Fish in a 90 Gallon Fish Tank

The general rule for fish tanks is that you should have a maximum of 1 inch of fish (length) for every gallon of water. Some people extend this to 1.5 inches with success, but it is not generally recommended. Bear in mind that the 1 inch of fish per gallon of water is based on the fish at their fully grown size, not the size that you buy them at!

It is therefore recommended that you have a maximum of 90 inches of fish in a 90 gallon fish tank. If you want more capacity it is worth considering either a 100 gallon or 150 gallon fish tank.

Best Fish for 90 Gallon Fish Tanks

As discussed above, it is best to limit your fish to about 90 inches in total length when constructing a 90 gallon fish tank. This can be made up in a range of ways. Whether you plan to breed fish, and indeed whether you are prepared to use dividers in your 90 gallon fish tank, will also affect the composition of fish in your tank.

It is important to bear in mind that more aggressive species such as Tiger Barbs will be better served in less crowded tanks. Just remember that just because a fish is aggressive doesn’t mean that it is predatory. Your best fish for 90 gallon fish tanks could include:

  • Cory fish (catfish)
  • Rainbow fish
  • Danios
  • Goldfish
  • Guppies

90 Gallon Fish Tank Dimensions

The standard dimensions of a 90 gallon fish tank are 48″ x 18″ x 25″. This equates to 122 x 46 x 64 cm in metric measurements. 90 gallon fish tanks provide plenty of space for a range of fish. Due to the weight, there are limited specialized stands available. They look great, however, on top of sturdy desks, cabinets and counter tops.

We believe the fish tanks discussed above are of high quality. But if you have a problem with them (or an older tank which you previously purchased) it is worth trying some aquarium safe silicone on hand to fix any leaks or cracks.

A 90 gallon fish tank weights 1050lbs when full (approximately 476kg). At this size it is definitely worth considering using a hang on back protein skimmer for your tank.
